Kriss Kicks and Mel, is the first short story for middle graders in the WE L.I.G.I.T series.( We Let Intelligence Guide our Thoughts and Intentions) . It brings to light the shoe-peer-pressures middle school black males experience and it also presents a glimpse into the internal and external conflicts that these students encounter in their social norms. Jehmel, the main character, must navigate two worlds. Counseling or mentoring groups can use this short story to teach conflict resolution and build confidence while  Language Arts teachers can utilize it to teach the use of strong verbs or the active voice to tell a story.
